Aesthetic Remedies for Environmental Amnesia
One unique feature of environmental aesthetics is its emphasis on the interactive involvement of human and non-human agents in place. If there is an aesthetic root for environmental amnesia, as Forrest Clingerman proposed, there is also a good chance for an aesthetic remedy. To find such a remedy, a rereading of the Kantian notion of disinterestedness offers a possibility to define aesthetic engagement in the context of a contemplative and respectful attitude towards nature that is motivated by sublime sentiments like humility and affectlessness. These aesthetic remedies, then, could prove themselves in reshaping perceptual and behavioral patterns concerning the environment.
